Vizhinjam Port Welcomes MSC Türkiye, the World’s Largest Eco-Friendly Container Ship

By Eva Richardson | The Logistic News
In a milestone moment for sustainable maritime logistics, Vizhinjam International Seaport in Kerala, India, welcomed the MSC Türkiye this week—currently the largest eco-friendly container ship ever constructed. The vessel’s arrival marks Vizhinjam’s emergence as a new powerhouse port along vital East-West shipping routes.
Operated by the Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC), the MSC Türkiye stretches nearly 400 meters in length and boasts a record-breaking TEU capacity of 24,346 containers. What makes the ship stand out, however, is not just its size—it’s the ship’s advanced environmental performance, thanks to fuel-efficient engines, energy-saving hull design, and emission-reduction technologies that align with IMO 2030 targets.
“This is a landmark moment for our port and for India’s ambitions to lead the future of sustainable trade,” said a spokesperson for Vizhinjam Port Authority.
The arrival of MSC Türkiye affirms Vizhinjam’s technical readiness to host ultra-large container vessels (ULCVs), and its growing role in international cargo connectivity between Europe, the Gulf, Southeast Asia, and the Far East.
Commissioned as part of India’s multi-phase port development strategy, Vizhinjam Seaport is designed to operate with minimal environmental impact and high automation. It features automated yard cranes, shore power, and connectivity to India’s inland logistics corridors, making it a key node in the subcontinent’s long-term trade transformation.
As global shipping giants look for ports that can meet both volume and environmental requirements, Vizhinjam is stepping into the spotlight—positioning itself as a smart, green gateway for international cargo flows.
