In a significant development for global aviation security, Cathay Cargo Terminal in Hong Kong has become the first ground-handling facility in Asia to attain the highest initial level of IATA Security Management System (SeMS) certification—Operating Status.

Awarded by the International Air Transport Association (IATA), the SeMS certification recognizes organizations that adopt a proactive, structured, and risk-based approach to managing aviation security. The certification was officially granted on Friday, March 21, 2025, positioning Cathay Cargo Terminal as a regional leader in security standards and operational integrity.

Raising the Bar for Cargo Security

Cathay Cargo Terminal’s accomplishment reinforces Hong Kong’s status as a premier air cargo logistics hub and demonstrates the terminal’s commitment to staying ahead of evolving threats. The SeMS framework emphasizes continuous improvement, regulatory compliance, and the integration of data-driven risk assessment into day-to-day operations.

Mark Watts, Chief Operating Officer of Cathay Cargo Terminal, underlined the company’s dedication to securing its facilities and operations.

“Achieving SeMS Operating Status reflects our unwavering focus on cargo security and operational resilience,” said Watts. “Recent investments in artificial intelligence-driven security systems, enhanced cybersecurity, and advanced intrusion detection technologies reflect our intent to be at the forefront of industry best practices.”

Watts emphasized that security goes beyond physical assets. Protecting customer data, cargo integrity, and employee safety requires a holistic, forward-thinking strategy—one that Cathay Cargo Terminal has prioritized through SeMS implementation.

Industry Recognition and Global Standards

Nick Careen, IATA’s Senior Vice President for Operations, Safety, and Security, praised Cathay Cargo Terminal’s leadership:

“Cathay Cargo Terminal has made SeMS part of its operational DNA. This certification not only sets a new benchmark for Asia but contributes to our global efforts to enhance aviation security through strategic planning and innovation.”

The formal certification ceremony is scheduled for April 15, 2025, at the IATA World Cargo Symposium in Dubai, where Cathay will be honored for its achievement.

A Track Record of Excellence

This milestone adds to an already comprehensive list of recognitions held by Cathay Cargo Terminal. The facility boasts IATA Environmental Assessment (IEnvA) accreditation, Competency-Based Training and Assessment (CBTA) for Dangerous Goods, and the full suite of Centre of Excellence for Independent Validators (CEIV) certifications—covering Fresh, Pharma, Live Animals, and Lithium Batteries.

By embedding SeMS into its operational framework, Cathay Cargo Terminal is not only enhancing its internal processes but also contributing to a broader uplift in aviation security standards across the region.
