The Panamanian government has appointed APM Terminals as the temporary operator of the Balboa and Cristóbal terminals, previously operated by the Panamanian subsidiary of a port group linked to CK Hutchison Holdings. This decision comes after the invalidation, by the courts, of the concession agreement — an episode that reignites debates about the legal security of port concessions and the continuity of service at a major maritime hub.

In the immediate term, the priority is operational: avoiding any disruption in productivity, ship scheduling, import/export processing, and intermodal connectivity. The message from the authorities is clear: the transition must be without impact for shippers, shipowners, and freight forwarders, even tho the situation creates uncertainty in the medium term (concession model, future operator, contractual conditions, investments).

For the global logistics community, this issue needs to be closely monitored: Panama is a critical passage for containerized flows and a decision point for network strategies (service, hubs, repositioning).
