MSC and Ports America formalise Louisiana terminal joint venture

The Port of New Orleans (Port NOLA), in partnership with Ports America and MSC’s Terminal Investment Limited (TiL), has officially established Louisiana International Terminal Holdings LLC, a joint venture that will operate the future Louisiana International Terminal (LIT).

The creation of the entity marks a significant milestone in the development of the project, which is set to become a next-generation container terminal in St. Bernard Parish.

While Port NOLA will retain responsibility for the design and construction phases, the joint venture will oversee terminal operations once the facility becomes operational.

The terminal is designed with an annual capacity of 2 million TEU, with initial volumes expected to range between 180,000 and 280,000 containers in its first year. Over a 25-year horizon, capacity is expected to expand significantly.

Spanning 162 hectares, the facility will be capable of accommodating the largest vessels serving the US Gulf Coast and will feature integrated connections across road, rail, and barge networks throughout the central United States.

Beth Branch, President and CEO of Port NOLA, described the project as a defining investment for both regional and national supply chains, highlighting its role in enhancing export capacity and long-term competitiveness.
