Tension in the Strait of Hormuz: Iranian speedboats threaten to intercept the tanker Stena Imperative

New episode of nervousness in one of the most sensitive maritime passages in the world: an American-flagged tanker, Stena Imperative, was reportedly ordered to stop and prepare for boarding during its transit thru the Strait of Hormuz, according to a report cited by Seatrade. According to available information, several armed speedboats approached the vessel and ordered it to shut down its engines. The tanker would have instead accelerated and continued on its course.
The incident, described as occurring in a regulated traffic zone, comes amid heightened regional tensions and increased naval presence. The elements mentioned also highlight the symbolic significance of the flag: the ship is presented as attached to an American tanker security program, intended to ensure strategic availability of commercial vessels in case of need.
